Senate Denounces Alleged Plot to Impeach Akpabio

By Mohammed Bello Doka.

In a statement released on Saturday, the Senate adamantly denied the existence of any plans to impeach Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, dismissing the reports as the work of "fifth columnists." Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Yemi Adaramodu, expressed the Senate's unity and steadfastness, asserting that the impeachment of the Senate President is out of the question.

The alleged plot to remove Akpabio has been circulating since June, fueled by speculations that he would serve as a "rubber stamp" for the presidency. Nevertheless, no senators have confirmed involvement in such a scheme.

Adaramodu emphasized that the Senate is a united and cohesive body, countering the publications as "satanic verses" and "fake and fallacious stories." He highlighted the Senate's diligent execution of its legislative and constitutional duties under Akpabio's leadership, including the passage of numerous bills and motions aimed at improving the welfare of Nigerian citizens. Additionally, he pointed out the Senate's success in screening and confirming Service Chiefs and Ministers, along with their essential oversight functions.

Adaramodu appealed to the public to disregard the reports and urged those outside the Senate, engaging in media stunts to disrupt harmony, to exercise caution. He stressed the importance of allowing the Senate to focus on its national obligations, so that progress can be made in the Nigerian project. Adaramodu also called on the media to exercise discernment and not become pawns of those spreading fake news.

Currently on recess, the Senate is scheduled to reconvene on September 26th.
