Insecurity: IGP Establishes Committee to Review Firearms Licensing and Regulations

By Mohammed Bello Doka

The Inspector-General of Police, Ag. IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has taken decisive action in addressing the issue of insecurity in the country by setting up an ad hoc committee. The committee's main task is to conduct a comprehensive review of firearms licensing and regulations, ensuring that the Nigeria Police Force is in line with the Firearms Act and other relevant laws. This move is aimed at promoting public safety and enhancing general security.

Under the committee's mandate, there will be a meticulous assessment of existing firearms licensing procedures and regulations. Their goal is to improve the effectiveness, transparency, and accountability of these processes. To achieve this, the police will engage with various stakeholders, including legal experts, civil society organizations, and professionals with expertise in the field. This collaborative effort will ensure a holistic and well-informed review.

In addition to this initiative, the IGP has also issued a stern warning to individuals involved in the illegal possession of firearms. He emphasized that the illegal proliferation of arms and light weapons poses a significant threat to the peace and stability of the nation. The Nigeria Police Force is dedicated to combating the fabrication, sale, possession, and use of illegal firearms. It is crucial to understand that possessing firearms without the appropriate licenses and permits is not only a violation of the law but also endangers society as a whole. The IGP reassured the public that the police will spare no effort in pursuing and prosecuting those engaged in these illegal activities to the fullest extent of the law.

To execute these directives effectively, the Inspector General of Police has urged all State Commissioners of Police and supervising Assistant Inspectors-General of Police in charge of Zonal Commands and tactical squads to launch a comprehensive crackdown on the illegal fabrication, sale, possession, and use of prohibited firearms across the country. The involvement of these key figures ensures that every corner of the nation will be covered in this effort to enhance security.

Furthermore, the IGP has appealed to all Nigerians to play an active role in combating the illegal possession of firearms. He urged citizens to report any suspicious activities related to firearms promptly. This can be done by contacting their local police divisions or utilizing various social media platforms provided by the Nigeria Police Force. The intention behind this call for citizen involvement is to create a safer environment and foster a sense of collective responsibility.

This initiative showcases the Inspector-General of Police's commitment to eradicating insecurity and ensuring the safety of Nigerians. By establishing the committee and reinforcing the strict enforcement of firearms regulations, the Nigeria Police Force aims to strengthen public safety and restore peace and stability throughout the country.
