In a recent interaction with the press, Dr. Betta Edu, the Minister for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, reaffirmed President Bola Tinubu's unwavering determination to eliminate poverty in Nigeria, aligning with the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) target.
Dr. Edu assured that the government's forthcoming poverty alleviation schemes, to be unveiled by her Ministry, will benefit every segment of society, including women, men, children, and people living with disabilities.
"Our President, Ahmed Bola Tinubu, has a clear vision for eradicating poverty in line with the SDGs," Dr. Edu emphasized. "Nigeria is fully committed to implementing these goals, and the President is resolute in pulling Nigerians out of poverty."
The Minister further stated that under President Tinubu's leadership, there will be no Nigerian living below the poverty line of one dollar ninety-five cents a day by the end of his administration.
Dr. Edu outlined the comprehensive poverty alleviation and humanitarian plans put in place by President Tinubu, aimed at uplifting vulnerable Nigerians. These plans include the creation of millions of jobs, providing assistance to citizens, and delivering palliative measures to households in even the most remote areas of the country.
"To date, the President has released funds to all states as a cushion to the effects of subsidy removal, along with distributing food items as palliatives across the nation, which are currently being distributed," she explained.
Furthermore, the Minister disclosed that the humanitarian plan encompasses various interventions, with a significant focus on establishing a humanitarian trust fund. This fund will facilitate resource mobilization to meet the needs of Nigerians.
Dr. Edu also commended President Tinubu for deviating from the norm by appointing young individuals, like herself, and increasing the participation of women in politics. She expressed gratitude for the opportunity to contribute to a better Nigeria alongside other young people serving in the Tinubu cabinet.
The commitment of the Tinubu government to eradicating poverty in Nigeria showcases a determination to ensure a prosperous and inclusive future for all citizens. With their robust poverty alleviation initiatives, millions of Nigerians will have the opportunity to escape the clutches of poverty by 2030.
