In a significant blow to the activities of the notorious Boko Haram insurgents, the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) has intensified its operations, resulting in mass surrenders by the extremist group. With their hideouts running low on supplies and under relentless pressure from the MNJTF, Boko Haram fighters have started laying down their weapons and turning themselves in.
The surrender wave began on 14 August 2023 and continued into the following day, as Boko Haram commanders, fighters, and their families surrendered to the troops of Sector 3 MNJTF in Cross Kauwa and Baga of Kukawa Local Government, Nigeria. The surrendered items included several firearms, ammunition, and various insurgency tools.
On the first day of the mass surrender, two commanders, nine main fighters, and 21 family members relinquished their violent activities and voluntarily handed over six AK-47 rifles, one FN Rifle (SLR), and other ammunition. They also surrendered two hand grenades, three Bandoliers, and a significant amount of ammunition.
The momentum of peaceful surrenders carried forward into the second day, as more Boko Haram members responded to the call for peace. Two additional commanders, four fighters, and 24 family members surrendered at the 403 Amphibious Brigade location in Baga. Among the items they turned over were two AK-47 rifles, seven magazines, two transistor radios, and a substantial amount of cash.
This milestone achievement has prompted the MNJTF to issue a renewed appeal to all remaining Boko Haram insurgents to abandon violence and embrace peace by surrendering. The MNJTF emphasized that surrender offers the safest path to peace and rehabilitation. As the operations against the extremist group intensify, the MNJTF remains steadfast in its commitment to bringing stability to the Lake Chad Basin region.
Lieutenant Colonel Abubakar Abdullahi, the Military Public Information Officer in N'Djamena, reiterated the importance of this breakthrough and the need for Boko Haram members to seize the opportunity to lay down their arms. The MNJTF's efforts are resolute, and they aim to bring an end to the reign of terror inflicted by Boko Haram, promoting a peaceful and secure environment for all.
