Army Destroyed Illegal Refinery In Delta State, Troops Crack Down on Oil Theft

By Mohammed Bello Doka.

In a continued effort to combat oil theft and sabotage in Nigeria's oil sector, the troops of 6 Division Nigerian Army have made significant progress in South South Nigeria. On the 23rd of August 2023, responding to actionable intelligence, troops conducted a daring operation to dismantle an illegal oil refinery site in the Ogbokoko and Atu areas of Warri South Local Government Area in Delta State.

The operation was swift and strategic as troops swooped in on the site, leaving no room for the oil thieves to escape. As a result, eight active ovens used for illegal refining of stolen crude oil were destroyed, along with fourteen storage reservoirs containing an estimated 200,000 liters of stolen crude oil. Additionally, troops discovered and seized 90,000 liters of locally refined Automotive Gas Oil (AGO).

The criminals, sensing the advancement of troops, fled the scene, leaving behind their illicit activities. To ensure that these illegal operations do not continue, the illegal refining site was destroyed in-situ, following the established guidelines of Operation Delta Safe. Currently, investigations are underway to apprehend the fugitive criminals and bring them to justice.

Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu, the Director of Army Public Relations, urges members of the public to play an active role in curbing economic sabotage by reporting any suspected acts of sabotage or criminality to security agencies. This cooperation will enhance ongoing operations and contribute to the efforts of maintaining law and order in the country.

With the latest success in the anti-oil theft operations, it is evident that the troops remain committed to protecting Nigeria's valuable natural resources. Their continued diligence and dedication serve as a reminder that no act of sabotage will be tolerated, as Nigeria strives to secure its energy sector for the benefit of its people and the nation as a whole.
