It is no longer news that the former Secretary to the government of the federation Babachir David Lawal is now obedient. This is not unconnected to Babachir's refusal to accept the decision of his former party the APC and it's flag bearer in the 2023 general elections Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu on their choice of a Muslim Muslim ticket, a subject that has continue to generate reactions from various quarters within and outside the country.
Although Babachir's decamping to the Labor party is not absent controversy in and on itself because majority of Nigerians view this single action as a portrayal of hypocrisy and double standards on the side of both Babachir and the labor party.
Hypocrisy and double standards on the side of Babachir because in many instances Babachir has preached honesty, integrity and competence as the yardstick on which Nigerians should measure their leaders rather than ethno religious sentiments. Babachir was quoted by vanguard via PM News 2 August 2022 thus
"At a thanksgiving in Abuja in October 2015 to mark his appointment, he revealed that he got the post with the help of Tinubu and Chief Bisi Akande, who were not related to him, but happened to be muslims.
“Goodness is not restricted to tribe, religion or political party”, he said in a report by Vanguard reporter, Emman Ovuakporie."
Morally it is double standards for Babachir to now crucify his former benefactors at the alter of selfishness, greed, pride and ego.
It is worth noting that in the above quote Babachir assented to the fact that Tinubu played a major role in making him the secretary to the government of the federation absent recourse to his faith, tribe and or regional basis considering the fact that both Babachir and Buhari are Northerners while Tinubu is a southerner.
It is also double standards for Babachir to now accuse his former party the APC for marginalising Northern Christians for a choice of a Muslim vice presidential candidate despite the party's numerous attempts to explain to everyone that cares to listen that the choice was as a result of political necessity and convenience rather than ethno religious sentiments.
It is also double standards on the side of the labor party, a party whose candidate is being whitewashed and presented to Nigerians by his supporters as a saint coming to rescue Nigerians from the shackles of corruption and bad governance.
I wonder if the Obedients were unaware of Babachir's past records as the former Secretary to the government of the federation and the circumstances leading to his suspension and eventual removal unceremoniously by President Mohammad Buhari on the 30th of October 2017.
For the records Babachir's about section on wikipedia read thus
"Babachir David Lawal (born 2 October 1954) is a Nigerian politician who was Secretary to the Government of the Federation from 2015 to 2017. He was appointed on 27 August 2015, by President Muhammadu Buhari. Lawal was suspended as Secretary to Government of Federation (SGF) by President Buhari on 19 April 2017, and was officially relieved of all duties on 30 October 2017 for misappropriating funds intended for alleviating the food crisis in Nigeria's Northeast, caused largely by Boko Haram."
Thus his suspension and removal in the infamous grass cutting scandal which earn him the nickname grass cutter on the social media platforms is a result of bribery, corruption, mismanagement of public funds as well as abuse of office.
It is not only shameful for a party that claim to provide solution and or alternative to a corruption ridden country to not only accept a decorated thief in their midst but to also celebrate same.
Well it is not surprising if one consider the fact that both Peter Obi and his hordes did not see anything wrong in Obi investing Anambra state funds into his family business while in office as a sitting Governor of Anambra state. As the old saying goes "show me your friend and I will tell you who you are." Babachir's decamping to labor party is akin to the saying "the chicken is finally coming home to roast."
